Building Your Teens' Self-Esteem (3)

A Series Powered by Parent Teen Relationship Consult (PTRC)

Include Your Teen In Decisions Making.

  • One of the vital ways to build your teen’s self esteem is to include him/her in making decisions by asking their opinions and suggestions when making decisions in the family. This will help him/her feel valuable, meritorious and worthy. Every teenager wants to be treated like an adult and not a child anymore, he/she should be allowed to have a voice and an opinion, knowing that his opinion matters helps to improve and boost his/her self esteem and show that you value their inputs. When it comes to big decisions that affect your child, try to make those decisions WITH him/her, not FOR him/her. These might be decisions about school, further study, staying out late and so on. Involving your teen in decision making doesn’t mean you have to sit back and entirely lose control. You must create an equilibrium between getting his opinions and making the final decision as his parent without making him/her feel irrelevant and valueless thereby creating a friction between you two.
