Building Your Teens' Self-Esteem (2)

A Series Powered by Parent Teen Relationship Consult (PTRC)

  • Correct In Love
In your attempt to correct your teen, you must be conscious of the words you use to correct him/her. Learn to find a balance between teaching your teen to accept constructive criticism and avoid saying hurtful or discouraging things at the same time. When your teen errs, you must ensure you tell him/her in a positive and helpful way so that you are able to help keep his/her self esteem intact. “thank you for washing the dishes, you dried the plates so well, you did a great job, next time you could try cleaning the floor so it will not be wet and slippery" is a perfect way to correct your teen and still help sustain a healthy and positive self esteem.
Avoid constant condemnation, negative criticism and use of harsh and upsetting words to correct your teen. Like the African man will say “scold with one hand while hugging with the other”.
