Pregnant woman 'arrested' for receiving bank transfer

Written by Chinenye Oba

A newly married young woman in Abuja Akachi (surname withheld) is one of the Nigerians who have had it rough due to the economic situation of the country (Nigeria). She opted to start up the now trending POS business, to support her husband in any little way she can.

She kick-started her new business by getting a host payment platform, a small caravan and a Point of Sale (POS) machine to begin this business journey. The business was worth her while and rewarding until she fell victim to POS-related transfer fraud.

Describing her bitter experience with the law enforcement agency (Police) and her host bank (Guaranty Trust Bank)  kept the tears flowing. Akachi confirmed that the business is financially fulfilling as it has enabled her support her family in her little way.

''Rbail.''ving transfers from customers is not in my habit doing this business, but I was forced to  due to the network problems I was experiencing on that day'' Akachi said. It all started when I noticed a restriction on my personal bank account, I called the customer care agent of my bank being that I am pregnant and gracing the bank was not what I wanted to do in a hurry. They assured me that everything was alright, but that I needed to visit my bank for some account updates. I was furious because in that account was some money I use for the day to day running of my business.

''One that day, I literally dragged my self to the bank with a means of identification of course. On getting there, my account officer took my ID card, went down stairs and kept forming busy. I was sincerely angry, because I had not had my lunch and my baby was busy kicking (pregnant mommies will understand), my account officer emerged, handed my ID to me and introduced some uniformed men to me. I was scared, because I did not know what I had done wrong. That was when they arrested me, bundled me to their van and drove me to the police station''

Why was I arrested; 'Akachi was arrested for receiving a fund transfer of N10250 from an allegedly kidnapped victim three month prior to the day of arrest'

At the police station...

''My husband rushed down to the station at my call, he was all emotional seeing me with my big bump and swollen face and feet behind the police counter. He tried making the police men see reasons to the fact that I was a victim in the whole situation''

''To cut the story short, I was insulted, called names, restricted from moving my feet around and at the end of the day, the police men insisted I pay the sum of N70000 to be granted bail. After all said and done, we paid the sum of N40000 and was granted bail.''

I am simply a person who wants to make a difference in this world. The world should be better than I met it because of me!
