Child Safe Guarding Standard

Keeping children safe while coining and implementing projects is an aspect that so many organizations do not consider. Organizations are mandated to ensure that children are prevented from harm, even if their focus area is not on children.

Thanks to GlobalGiving, for the insight on this concept for 'child safety'.

The first Safe Guarding Standards were launched over 12 years ago by a coalition of relief and development charities that later became known as Keeping Children Safe.

Inappropriate designed programmes as well as poor operational management creates the possibility of risk to children. There are many ways a safeguarding concern can arise, even when an organization is not working with children.
Examples:
*An organization runs a program in a rural community, with traditional leaders in attendance. The organization sent words before time to the locals for selection of volunteers who will serve at the program. During the program, volunteers were found to be underaged children, who were supposed to be in school.
* A male staff of an organization asks for a few days off to get married. Afterward, it became clear that the bride is 14 years old.
* An organization creates a food bank to feed hungry women and children in a community. After the program, an unanimous report gets to the organization that some of the volunteers maltreated some of the children emotional.
These and many more examples can be related to harming a child or children by an organizations program and staff.

Child Safeguarding is a commitment that organizations have to ensure that their staff, operation and programmes do no harm to children.

Child-safe organizations are what most organizations will conform to be in Nigeria as the word has gone out. (we will serve as an agent to further spread the word)
P.S Thanks to organizations like GlobalGiving.

Organizations have to understand the possible risk that their operations, staff, and programmes may have or is having on children, especially on the immediate communities where they operate, whether directly or indirectly and implementing measures to address them.

In addition, the Where, When, and How of the effects of operations and programmes of an organization should be understood, whilst policies and procedures coined to prevent and respond to this area of concern.

Also, appropriate persons should be designated to act as the focal point to receive and manage any safeguarding concerns and subsequent inquiry. These persons should ensure safeguarding trainings for staff and volunteers.

Finally, a clear code of conduct should be set to ensure that all staff understand their professional boundaries when working with children.
